Mastering the Duck Dive: A Complete Tutorial

The duck dive is an essential technique for getting through breaking waves efficiently. When executed properly, it conserves energy and gets you to the lineup faster.

What is a Duck Dive?

A duck dive involves pushing your board underwater to pass beneath oncoming waves rather than going over or through them. It's most effective with shortboards and small to medium-sized boards.

Step-by-Step Technique

1. Timing and Approach

  • Build up speed paddling toward the wave
  • Start your duck dive 6-8 feet before the wave reaches you
  • Too early or too late and you'll get pushed back

2. Push Down the Nose

  • Grip the rails near the nose
  • Push down with your arms and chest weight
  • The nose should go underwater at a 45-degree angle

3. Sink the Tail

  • As the nose submerges, use your knee or foot to push the tail down
  • This creates a scooping motion that takes you deeper
  • Keep your body flat and streamlined

4. Level Out and Rise

  • Once under the wave, angle the board upward
  • Let buoyancy bring you back to the surface
  • Resume paddling immediately

Common Mistakes

  • Not going deep enough
  • Pushing down too early
  • Letting go of the board
  • Not using leg/knee to sink the tail
  • Arching your back instead of staying flat

Practice Tips

Start in small waves and gradually work up to larger surf. Practice the motion on flat water first. Film yourself to check your form. With repetition, the duck dive becomes second nature.

Remember: if your board is too big (generally over 7 feet), consider the turtle roll technique instead.
